Dipping Spending Or Not, Forget TV – Social Networking Campaigns Reach A Huge Audience
I was recently asked in a meeting with a CMO, “Why am I on Facebook?” At the time, thinking on my feet, I gave a convoluted and complicated answer. Now I can distill it into a single sentence. “Marketers go where the audience is.” In Canada, Facebook has an audience share on-par with traditional TV networks before Cable. Think circa 1980′s!
Data is always a good way to support my claim, so voila, here you see Market Charts‘ Top 10 Social Networking Websites & Forums for 2008 (based on US Market share).
Unfortunately Market Charts doesn’t publish Canadian data. The Canadian chart would likely have YouTube and Facebook beating out MySpace.
It’s also worth noting that although Market Charts doesn’t categorize YouTube as a Social-Networking site, it is. And YouTube’s audience is awesome at about 55% market share. To put it into percepctive, think CBS, NBC and ABC’s audience combined (before Cable). Huge.
